E.M.’s Tribute Songs

This week’s theme for Song Lyric Sunday is tribute songs. I have a lot of these songs that run across different genres, so sit back and enjoy the rest of your night with DJ E.M. *giggles* (I actually did use to DJ on SecondLife though.)

The first one, I’ll Be Missing You, is a tribute to Notorious BIG by his best friend, Sean “Puffy” Combs (Puff Daddy), 112, and Big’s wife, Faith Evans. If you are not familiar with this story, Notorious BIG (Biggie Smalls) was gunned down and killed in California in February of 1997. His real name was Christopher Wallace. There have been docuseries about his death, along with the death of Tupac Shakur.

“I’ll Be Missing You”
(feat. 112, Faith Evans)

[Puff Daddy:]
Every day I wake up, I hope I’m dreamin’
I can’t believe this shit
Can’t believe you ain’t here
Sometimes it’s just hard for a nigga to wake up
It’s hard to just keep goin’
It’s like I feel empty inside without you bein’ here
I would do anything, man, to bring you back
I’d give all this shit, shit the whole lot
I saw your son today, he look just like you
You was the greatest, you’ll always be the greatest
I miss you, B.I.G.
Can’t wait ’til that day when I see your face again
I can’t wait ’til that day when I see your face again

This right here tell me why
Goes out to every one that has lost someone that they truly loved
Come on, check it out

Seems like yesterday we used to rock the show
I laced the track, you locked the flow
So far from hanging on the block for dough
Notorious, they got to know
That life ain’t always what it seem to be
Words can’t express what you mean to me
Even though you’re gone, we still a team
Through your family, I’ll fulfill your dream
(that’s right)

In the future, can’t wait to see
If you open up the gates for me
Reminisce some time, the night they took my friend
Try to black it out, but it plays again
When it’s real, feeling’s hard to conceal
Can’t imagine all the pain I feel
Give anything to hear half your breath (half your breath)
I know you still living your life after death

[Faith Evans:]
Every step I take,
Every move I make
Every single day,
Every time I pray
I’ll be missing you
Thinking of the day,
When you went away
What a life to take,
What a bond to break
I’ll be missing you

[Puff:]
I miss you B.I.G.

It’s kinda hard with you not around
Know you’re in heaven smiling down
Watching us while we pray for you
Every day we pray for you
‘Til the day we meet again
In my heart is where I’ll keep you, friend
Memories give me the strength I need to proceed
Strength I need to believe

My thoughts, B.I.G., I just can’t define (can’t define)
Wish I could turn back the hands of time
Us in the 6,
Shop for new clothes and kicks
You and me taking flicks
Making hits, stages they receive you on
I still can’t believe you’re gone (can’t believe you’re gone)
Give anything to hear half your breath (half your breath)
I know you still living your life after death

[Faith Evans:]
Every step I take,
Every move I make
I miss you
Every single day,
Every time I pray
I’ll be missing you
Thinking of the day,
When you went away
What a life to take,
What a bond to break
I’ll be missing you

Somebody tell me why

One black morning when this life is over I know I’ll see your face

[112 (Puff):]
Every night I pray,
Every step I take
Every move I make,
Every single day

Every night I pray,
Every step I take
(Every day that passes)
Every move I make,
Every single day
(Is a day that I get closer to seeing you again)

Every night I pray,
Every step I take
(We miss you, B.I.G., and we won’t stop)
Every move I make,
Every single day
(Cause we can’t stop, that’s right)

Every night I pray,
Every step I take
Every move I make,
Every single day
(We miss you, B.I.G.)

[Faith Evans:]
Every step I take

This next song is called In This River by The Black Label Society ft. Zakk Wylde. The video features clips of himself (Zakk) and Pantera guitarist, Dimebag (Darrell Abbott), which is who the song is dedicated to. Dimebag was killed on an Ohio stage while he was performing in December of 2004.

“In This River”

I’ve been around this world
Yet I see no end
All shall fade to black again and again
This storm that’s broken me
My only friend

[Chorus:]
In this river all shall fade to black
In this river ain’t no coming back
In this river all shall fade to black
Ain’t no coming back

Withdrawn I step away
Just to find myself
The door is closed again
The only one left
This storm that’s broken me
My only friend

[Chorus x2]
[Solo]
[Chorus x2]

This upcoming song is one that was written to deal with all of the loss in the AIDS epidemic that was happening in the mid-90s. Mariah Carey teamed up with Boyz II Men to sing the song One Sweet Day.

“One Sweet Day”
(feat. Mariah Carey)

[B II M:]
Sorry I never told you
All I wanted to say
And now it’s too late to hold you
‘Cause you’ve flown away
So far away
Ayyy

[MC:]
Never had I imagined
Living without your smile
Feeling and knowing you hear me
It keeps me alive
Alive

[All:]
And I know you’re shining down on me from heaven
Like so many friends we’ve lost along the way
And I know eventually we’ll be together
[MC: Together]
One sweet day
[MC:]
Eventually I’ll see you in heaven…

[B II M:]
Darling, I never showed you (I never showed you)
Assumed you’d always be there (I thought you’d always be there)
I took your presence for granted
But I always cared
([MC:] But I always cared)
And I miss the love we shared

[All:]
And I know you’re shining down on me from heaven
Like so many friends we’ve lost along the way
And I know eventually we’ll be together
[MC: Together]
One sweet day
[MC:] Eventually I’ll see you in heaven

[B II M:]
Although the sun will never shine the same
I’ll always look to a brighter day
[MC:]
Yeah
Lord I know when I lay me down to sleep
You will always listen as I pray

[All:]
And I know you’re shining down on me from heaven
Like so many friends we’ve lost along the way
And I know eventually we’ll be together
[MC:] Together
One sweet day

[All:]
And I know you’re shining down on me from heaven
Like so many friends we’ve lost along the way
And I know eventually we’ll be together
[MC:] Together
One sweet day

[MC:] Sorry I never told you (oooh)
[All:] All I wanted to say

The next two songs are personal songs of tribute for me.

The first personal tribute is The Dance by Garth Brooks, and it was a song that was played for my friend’s funeral my senior year. He committed suicide, and this was the song we would all play for him at his graveside throughout the years.

“The Dance”

Looking back on the memory of
The dance we shared ‘neath the stars above
For a moment all the world was right
How could I have known that you’d ever say goodbye

And now I’m glad I didn’t know
The way it all would end the way it all would go
Our lives are better left to chance
I could have missed the pain
But I’d have had to miss the dance

Holding you I held everything
For a moment wasn’t I a king
But if I’d only known how the king would fall
Hey who’s to say you know I might have changed it all

And now I’m glad I didn’t know
The way it all would end the way it all would go
Our lives are better left to chance
I could have missed the pain
But I’d have had to miss the dance

Yes my life is better left to chance
I could have missed the pain
But I’d have had to miss the dance

The second personal song is Long As I Can See the Light by Creedence Clearwater Revival, my dad’s favorite song. It seems fitting since his birthday is in 2 days. I played this song for him as he requested as they were lowering him into the ground.

“Long As I Can See The Light”

Put a candle in the window, ’cause I feel I’ve got to move.
Though I’m going, going, I’ll be coming home soon,
‘Long as I can see the light.

Pack my bag and let’s get movin’, ’cause I’m bound to drift a while.
When I’m gone, gone, you don’t have to worry long,
‘Long as I can see the light.

Guess I’ve got that old trav’lin’ bone, ’cause this feelin’ won’t leave me alone.
But I won’t, won’t be losin’ my way, no, no
‘Long as I can see the light.

Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Oh, Yeah!

Put a candle in the window, ’cause I feel I’ve got to move.
Though I’m going, going, I’ll be coming home soon,
Long as I can see the light.
Long as I can see the light.
Long as I can see the light.
Long as I can see the light.
Long as I can see the light.
