He had promised her that he would be back home before she knew it. Jamie had to leave on the 9 o’clock train, and Violet was not invited. Jamie’s parents had not invited her to the gathering because she was not the kind of girl that they approved of. When he sat down in the seat on the passenger train, he had regret as they pulled away from the terminal and crossed the first bend of the mountain. He wouldn’t be able to keep that promise. He was not coming back.
